How to make a headless fake display for the Intel GPU so that the QuickSync decoder (and encoder if your CPU supports it) works even if there are no display connected to it.
Note: If you have Windows 8 and have installed the latest 3xxx drivers, you will not have to do this. The supplied IntelQuickSyncDecoder.dll in the installer can already support headless mode without having to create a fake display.
Right-click the desktop, and select ‘Screen Resolution’. The Screen Resolution applet window below will appear, with your primary display connected to your non-Intel GPU being selected.
Click the ‘Detect’ button, and a few grey boxes with ‘Another display not detected’ will appear. Select the one that will make the ‘Display’ setting to have the ‘Available display output on: Intel(r) HD Graphics’ option.
While still selecting that particular grey box, go to ‘Multiple displays’ drop-down menu, and select ‘Try to connect anyway on: VGA’ option, like below.
The window below will appear.
Click the ‘Apply’ button, and you will be returned to the first display’s properties.
Click on the newly made monitor number 2 (the black box). Then in the Multiple displays’ drop-down menu, select the ‘Extend these displays’ option.
Then click ‘Apply’ button. The headless fake display for the Intel GPU has now been created. To prevent your mouse pointer from spilling into the fake display device, drag the fake display the way it is shown below.
