Mojo ‘Abraham Lincoln’ Jojo would have been far more successful in his destiny to rule the world if he has access to this website. Then again, almost all villains in this anime need to read that website.

After seeing Wolf and Spice taking over the provisional title of Anime of the Year 2008 in the last post, now let’s see whether Demashita Powerpuff Girls Z, an anime adaptation of a Cartoon Network series, can do the same to our current Anime of the Year 2006, Chocotto Sister.

Story:-
Three unsuspecting middle-schoolers were turned into superheroes after they were bathed in a white light that comes out from an iceberg that was destroyed by Professor Utonium’s son with Chemical Z. After that, the three of them has to protect a futuristic Tokyo City from the threats of monsters that was spawned from the black light that comes out from the same explosion.

Do you watch the Cartoon Network version as I do? If yes, do not hope that there are many similarities between USA and Japan versions because you can safely say that this anime is basically a remake of the Cartoon Network version. For example, our heroines here are not even made with Chemical Z, but a variation of the same chemical made a long time ago by Professor Utonium’s ancestors. Chemical Z was instead used by Mojo Jojo (whose origin is completely different than the Cartoon Network version) to make the Rowdyruff Boys, thus making them immune when Him (Kare) summoned all his black particles back to him. There are extra characters not found in Cartoon Network version, and some settings are changed like where our heroines go to middle-school while the America’s versions’ went to kindergarten.

This anime STARTS VERY SLOWLY, with nearly the first third of the 52-episode anime completely dedicated to characters introductions and developments. The story primarily consists of appearances by Mojo Jojo and co. having their collective asses kicked by our protagonists, splashed by some monster-of-the-week episodes. Kare (and the plot) only appears in the middle of the series and was woely undeveloped for at least 10 episodes after that. It is only in the last third of the series did this anime comes to life with a somewhat decent story, but the ending is awful in both substance and presentation. This is the first weakness of this anime, which is uneven pacing of the flow of the storyline.

As mentioned above, the anime started slowly, then started to roll faster after Rowdyruff Boys and Kare were introduced but sped up too much during the also aforementioned awful ending, which is the second weakness of this anime. My main complaint about the ending is about the time-travel plot device used in the penultimate episode because that alone punches some holes in the overall plot of this series (like how all the white lights is supposedly needed to seal Kare when you can see as plain as daylight that the Powerpuff Girls predecessors in the distant-past Edo did not need to do so) and also how the ending’s pacing is too fast relative to the pacing of the whole series (spread across only 3 episodes, surely the director can kill some of the monster-of-the-week episodes and give it towards the presentation of the ending).


Hyper Blossom and Mojo Jojo, the best characters in this series. Both hated each other guts, acts first without thinking, extremely destructive in their actions, love sweet foods/snacks and are failures in romance. Sometime I wonder whether these two are twins separated at birth.

What saves this anime from the oblivion Hayate no Gotoku finds itself in is that the character development in this anime is excellent in most places. Two characters comes to mind; Mojo Jojo and Hyper Blossom respectively. These two awfully similar characters are completely superior compared to their Cartoon Network counterparts. Being a remake, Hyper Blossom in this anime seems to be a cross between Cartoon Networks Blossom and Buttercup, while Mojo Jojo of this anime is less serious than the American version and more like Sokka in Avatar The Last Airbender. Other characters are very well done too to a degree, but some characters are woefully underused and undeveloped, like Taka-chan and the Rowdyruff Boys.

Character Design:-
Considering the target demographic, the design is very well done especially our superheroes. Monster designs can be mixed bag though and the mecha at the end of the anime is awful to say the least. Even the numerous short-lived Mojo Robo mechas looks better. The lack of black hair, except for Professor Utonium and son is acceptable considering the futuristic setting this anime is set up in.


Yet another parody of The Scream in Japanese anime. To be fair there is also Mona Lisa being featured in this anime.

Voice Acting:-
In general, voice acting in this anime is good, with Mojo Jojo, Hyper Blossom, Shirogane ‘Princess’ Himeko and Kare being the best. Definitely a plus point of this anime.


A creepy near-bestiality moments in this anime.

Music:-
The OST is great, but from all 6 OP/ED themes, only the 1st OP and 2nd ED themes are of any good.


This is a good parody of Darth Vader by Mojo Jojo in one of the best episodes in this series. Scenes like this are the reason why Mojo Jojo is one of the best characters in this anime.

Animation/Direction:-
The animation in this anime is decent for most parts, but it can be awful at times in low-area low-motion scenes. Fast-paced scenes do not seem to be affected. Unfortunately, choreography is just average with so many repetitive techniques been used by the heroines. The directing is not really that good either, for reasons mentioned in the story section.

Conclusion:-
7 out of 10
. Chocotto Sister still reigns supreme as the Best Anime of the Year 2006.


This anime could have done better with more appearances from this trio.


Our main female protagonist and also the one of the best characters in this series.

It is about time that I give H2O footprints in the sand a new challenge, and it comes in the form of a very Nodame Cantabile-esque title, Wolf and Spice (or Spice and Wolf). No need to keep you guessing whether Wolf and Spice will dethrone the former that has kept the throne for 3 months, because they have done exactly just that. Read on to know how this excellent series managed to do it.

Story:-
In a setting that looks like Europe in medieval times (thus I will not complain about lack of black hair whatsoever), a merchant encountered a she-wolf that used to be worshipped by local villagers before the arrival for a certain organized religion. She asked the merchant to accompany her to her homeland in the north, and from there on they travelled together as the merchant is doing his merchant thing while avoiding the church from discovering a cute demon in their midst.

This anime reminded me of Nodame Cantabile a lot, particularly the synergy in the relationship between the two main protagonists. In fact, they are very similar to the protagonists in Nodame Cantabile, with only some minimal differences. The character strength for both of our protagonists here is what makes this anime very appealing, despite the character development that isn’t exactly spectacular like the one in Nodame Cantabile.

The story by itself is not as good as Nodame’s, but the structure is eerily similar. Just replace the classical music elements in Nodame with merchant trading skills, plus throw in a female protagonist that can do supernatural things the way her compatriot in Inukami did and you got Wolf and Spice. The story flows smoothly with decent pacing despite the gap left by the mysterious episode 7 that isn‘t released yet, before arriving at an excellent ending that is superbly executed. That scene where the main male protagonist outwitted the main female protagonist when the clock tower rang at 7 in the morning is very inventive and capped a good way to create a closure. Plus, the ending opens up the possibility for a second season, which I will definitely watch.

With only 12 episodes (not counting the unreleased episode 7), this anime has barely showed the potential that its story has. This is why, even when I say that the story is not as good as Nodame Cantabile above, that fact will not count negatively towards this series. As long as a second (or more) season comes out and we got to see what will happen to these two very lovable main characters at the end of their journey, it is fine by me. This anime is just too good not to be given a second season unlike for example, that awful Hatenkou Yuugi.

Character Design:-
A positive point of this anime, the character design is simply excellent especially for the two main protagonists. No complaints about the lack of black hair (some bystanders have them though) because of the medieval Europe settings.

Voice Acting:-
This is the part where this anime is not a match for Nodame Cantabile. The voice acting in this anime is great but nowhere near the awesome Tomokazu Seki/Ayako Kawasumi combo in Nodame. Then again that combo will be hard to be defeated.

Music:-
The OP/ED themes are good but not so for the OST.

Animation/Direction:-
This 2008 anime surely has very good animation which is not affected by fast-paced scenes. The choreography is quite decent too, but the directing is not exactly outstanding. At least he/she keeps the story flows very well but whoever decides that the episode 7 has to be released in DVD must be shot.

Conclusion:-
Midway during watching the series, I decided that this anime will get a 9, but after seeing the strong ending, I changed my mind and gives it a perfect score, 10 out of 10. With this, Wolf and Spice will take the Anime of The Year 2008 title from H2O footprints in the sand. Plus, a new tag ‘perfect score’ will be added to all anime rated 10 out of 10 from now on. The move to wordpress really paid off.


To the main male protagonist, if you want to persuade an impressionable young oppressed naive lady to do one of the most heinous crimes in the eyes of the Church, you probably do not want to do it in the open where a lot of people gathers. You know, like open-air bars that served alcohol in daylight? Who knows, the Church may have eyes and ears in places like that. And having your partner to accompany you when all she is doing is chugging beer usually will not give a good impression either.

Chihiro, our main protagonist that panics a lot.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away will wrap up the last of the three Studio Ghibli movie marathon for this blog. All in all, Studio Ghibli movies are interesting, in their own peculiar way. It is hard really to compare them with, for example, Makoto Shinkai movies because their style is vastly different. Expect to see more of their movies reviewed here in the future, but a cursory glance at their library shows that the majority of their titles have the supernatural element in them, just like this movie and Kiki’s Delivery Service. I preferably want to see more realistic titles such as Grave of The Fireflies because I like realism more from an established and prestigious studio like Ghibli.


“No! The food is a lie….”

Story:-
Our main protagonist Chihiro is in a bad mood because her family moved town without her consent. During the journey to their new home, her father was sidetracked into a remote jungle where they find an abandoned amusement park. There, her parents were trapped by the bait in the form of tasty food that turned them into pigs and Chihiro has to work extra hard to free them from the clutches of an evil sorceress that run a hot bath inn.

The story in this movie is considerably better than Kiki’s Delivery Service, but a little bit inferior to Grave of The Fireflies. Hayao Miyazaki has really improved his directing here compared to what he has done in Kiki’s Delivery Service, mainly because the story in this movie has a better presentation in the form of excellent pacing and much better control of the flow of the storyline compared to the other 2 movies reviewed before this. And those two movies did not do that bad either in those aspects. If only Grave of The Fireflies has the same treatment, it would have gotten a perfect score. He sure has become wiser and more experienced in the 10+ years between Kiki and Chihiro.

Character development seems to focus mainly on Chihiro at the expense of everyone else, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. This ensured that she becomes the strongest and most interesting character in this movie. Even Kiki, a title main protagonist is not even half as good as Chihiro did. Nevertheless, other characters like the sorceress cum hot bath manager/proprietor and the dragon boy have not been neglected either, but of course they are nothing when compared to the main protagonist. This also shows how much Hayao Miyazaki has improved in the years between Kiki and Chihiro.

Unfortunately the ending is not exactly an improvement compared to the 10+ years older Kiki’s Delivery Service. They are essentially the same tired cliché-laden predictable ending you can see from titles of the same genre, and the only difference between these two is that Spirited Away has a better presentation. Both Spirited Away and Kiki’s Delivery Service endings pales in comparison to the awesome tear-jerker ending that Grave of The Fireflies will show you. That cremation scene is truly brilliant!


Parents nowadays do not listen to their children, always thinking that they are right.

Character Design:-
With this movie, I started to think that Studio Ghibli has this generic signature way of doing character design for all their movies, mainly because the difference between the designs in the three movies reviewed here is minimal. This is not a bad thing, but I actually expect more variations when it comes to different movies in different settings (World War 2, 19th century Europe-like city and an alternate dimension). The lack of black hair is forgivable in this movie, although I think Chihiro parents should at least have black hairs.


Ok, I did mention that the character design is not that different between the three movies, but that UNNATURAL teardrops is certainly unique for this movie only.

Voice Acting:-
Compared to the first 2 Ghibli movies reviewed here, Spirited Away would be ranked behind Grave of The Fireflies but ahead of Kiki’s Delivery Service. Despite her best efforts, Chihiro is simply nowhere near Setsuko in this aspect. Still, the voice acting in this movie is very well done with Chihiro being outstanding, and definitely a positive point of this movie.

Music:-
The OST is good and the ED theme is decent, but I think the older Kiki’s Delivery Service is better in this aspect compared to this movie. Still, this is still a positive point of this movie and it has performed better than Grave of The Firelies.


Some of the choreography in this movie, in this case involve our heroine running on a collapsing steelpipe.

Animation/Direction:-
Being newer by more than 10 years compared to Kiki’s Delivery Service and Grave of The Fireflies allowed Spirited Away to trounce both movies (DVD remastered or not) handily in this section. The animation in this movie is top-notch, even in fast-paced scenes. Choreography is also done well, but of course nowhere near the level of Avatar The Last Airbender. Meanwhile many of my comment about Hayao Miyazaki directing has already been explained above, but I also want to mention that he has managed to improve his camerawork significantly.

Conclusion:-
9 out of 10.
While this movie has inferior story to Grave of The Fireflies, it make up for this in other areas, such as better presentation and music.
