Monsters that will feature in this anime.

Today is a complete review of the creepiest anime I have watched to date, Midori no Hibi. I’ve double-checked and it really has only 13 episodes, thus I didn’t f*cked up the way I did with D.Gray-man.

Story:-
Our protagonist Seiji Sawamura is your typical high-school delinquent who are desperate for a girlfriend in his last year in high-school. One fine morning, he wakes up to find a miniature girl stitched up on his right-hand. Getting rid of her is the theme of this anime.

This is your typical romantic comedy title (which I spared from my usually higher standard for romance titles) if you can stomach the concept of having a miniature female human as a right-hand. The story is simple but supported by good presentation. Character development outside of the two main protagonists is limited though, mainly because of the limited airtime.

I think this series would do better if it has more episodes. This series has so much potential for more substance for the story that can be expanded with more airtime. In fact, I have decided to read the manga to see whether this series is better on that format or not.

update (23 Jan.2008) – Just finished the manga, and it seems that the anime is just a watered-down version of the manga. Credit to the author though because he knows when to stop the series, ending it just when the story is about to become stale. Inuyasha can take a lesson from this.

A victim trying to run away in vain.

Character Design:-
They are done very well, but I have a complaint about how some female characters are so similar, they put me off my guard for a second. Example is Takako Ayase and a friend of the female protagonist that she meets in the dream episode. They are so similar I thought they are the same person.

Voice acting:-
Overall, the voice acting here are decent, but no one stands out from the rest.

One of the corpses….

Music:-
The OST and ED theme are excellent. The OP theme is not. Enough said.

Animation/Direction:-
The animation quality is excellent, even in the little fast-aced scenes where the male protagonist is fighting other delinquents. Choreography is average though. The directing is good enough to make the simple story charming with little cliché that saddles similar titles in the same genre.

Conclusion:-
8 out of 10.
Well, that’s all about it. There’s probably no more review for this week I think.

This is truly hell on earth.

Allen Walker, betrayed by his allies very quickly.

For the first time in this blog short history, I will write a partial anime review for D.Gray-man. I thought the anime has finished at episode 65 and went ahead to watch it (I’ve downloaded them already but did not watched it). Only after watching about 30 episodes or so did I found out that the anime has not finished yet. So I went ahead to finish all 65 episodes and do this review anyway, and I promised myself I that check future titles that they have already ended before I start. BTW, as this is a 2006 anime, it will compete with Kiba The TV Animation for the Anime of the Year 2006 award.

Story:-
Allen Walker, the series protagonist that has lots of excess baggage with him, joined a mysterious organization in order to save the world from being destroyed by another mysterious organization. The members of the former mysterious organization possess the power of Innocence, which is used to destroy the Akuma created by the latter mysterious organization who wants to destroy the world.

This is your bog standard shounen anime, not that different from Bleach or Naruto. In fact I think Naruto minus the humongous filler episodes is better than this series. Saving the world from devastation is the main theme for this anime, and you and I know that this is an overused storyline in this genre. The series does not even made any efforts to try and being unique here.

With your standard average storyline, come the average protagonists which construct is similar to many other heroes in other average shounen titles. Here is where Kiba really shines, because the protagonist in it is so much better than Allen Walker and company. Speaking of character strength, I also wondered why all the interesting characters belong to the evil mysterious organization. The Earl of Millennium and a couple of the Noah’s family members has more substance and depth than any members of the forces of good. And the best character in this anime is a level 2 Akuma to boot.

The last moments of Mimi, the best character so far in this series.

Mimi may have only a few episodes of air time, but her character is very well developed in the limited time she has. When she eventually died, I clapped my hands in applause of the strongest character so far in this series. She is proof than the directors can indeed do good character developments, something that the Allen Walkers or the Lenalees or Lavies etc. can do more with.

The story also suffers with some pacing problems. Right after when Earl of Millennium declared that the ‘curtain is rising’, I have a feeling that the directors is doing all they can not to advance the main storyline, using several useless episodes that don’t even aid any character development whatsoever. I hope that there are no more of the bullsh*t episodes like these in the latter part of this anime.

Apply to many shounen anime out there too.

Character Design:-
The character design in this anime is good, despite the huge number of casts. More often than not, their individuality is retained. Black hair exists but in minuscule amounts.

Voice acting:-
Mixed bag at best. Some characters has great voice acting, like Mimi, Earl of Millennium and Yu Kanda but the main protagonist Allen Walker is just average. That sums up the vast cast of voice acting in this series.

If the Akuma reads the evil overlord list, this girl is a goner already.

Music:-
The OST is decent but no OP/ED themes have caught my attention yet.

Animation/Direction:-
This series has good animation quality even in fast-paced scenes. Choreography for action scenes is average with not-so-good fighting scenes. The directing is at best average with reasons outlined above.

Conclusion:-
Up to episode 65, 7 out of 10. Kiba The TV Animation (with 9 points) is still the best 2006 anime I have reviewed to date. This anime can still improve though if the storyline is made more unique and better character development is done for main characters.

A model of one of the Akuma, complete with -nya at every ending of a sentence.

The dialogue that started everything. Eventually he is able to have his way with her at the end. Persistence really pay off you know!

This time it takes me only a day to finish and able to review another 2007 anime, in face of the current title holder Nodame Cantabile. Here is my mini-review of CODE-E. If you wonder where the hell Myself Yourself review is, this is because it seems that that anime seems to suck and I will delay its review to a later date.

Story:-
A female high school student that can emit EM waves was being hounded down by a science freak who wants to ‘examine’ her body in the name of science. Throughout the series she was stalked by him, and that’s about it for the 12-episode run, as she eventually succumbed and gives way to his nasty desires.

Actually the series started very strongly for about 3 or 4 episodes before going downhill towards the end of the series. I can’t really make up the ending, whether there will be a second season or not (moving note: there is). If there is none, then the finale is really f*cked-up. If there will be a second season, then the finale seems to be hurried up. Probably the series can do with an extra episode or so.

I will also want to complain about some big plot holes too, an example will be how Saihashi Yuma tells Sonomi Kujo about Ebihara Chinami losing her powers, despite the fact Kujo do not really know Saihashi well. Plus, Kujo does not seem to suspect why Saihashi knows that fact. It seems that off-screen, these two has become closer without being explained to the audience.

So true. I think he is doing well with his joke attempt but those Japanese high school girls has been indoctrinated with low quality Japan TV.

Character Design:-
A positive point of the anime, the character design is best described as ‘believable’. The two main protagonists was designed in the way that fits their roles perfectly, and to a certain extent did not conform to the usual rules of the shoujo genre this anime is. Other characters are good too, especially Sonomi Kujo.

Voice Acting:-
Mixed bag overall, but I like Sonomi Kujo voice as she was outstanding. Regrettably, the two main protagonist voices are just average, even the 2 blonde antagonists is better.

Music:-
Just like Zero no Tsukaima, the OST is good but the OP/ED themes are forgettable.

Animation/Direction:-
Probably the first 2007 anime I watched that has average animation quality. Frame skips are noticeable even in average-speed scenes. With explosions being the only thing that can be described as action scenes, there are no comments about choreography. About the directing, it is decent except for the plot holes explained above.

Conclusion:-
7 out of 10.
If only the story can keep its great start, it will score higher. Nodame can breath a sigh of relief here.
