The English language died in the making of this anime.

Taking more than a week to watch from start to finish, this is the review of the humongous space soap-opera Legend of Galactic Heroes, finally fully subbed by Central Anime. Any self-respecting anime-lover must not give this masterpiece a miss. Read on for more details.

Story:-
Two space superpowers in a distant future setting are locked in a long war, led by 2 charismatic leaders who tried to bring it to end and achieve their dreams. Basically that’s all to it in this anime. What makes this anime so excellent is the interwoven stories involving major characters at both sides of the interplanetary war. Betrayal, romance, friendship, adventure, you got it all. Major characters died left and right, inclusive of the main protagonists by the end of the series. It’s like watching some telenovela or something, only that this anime is far better than that Yo Soy Betty La Fea that my mom seems to like.

The awesome story flows along nicely, but tapered down somewhat towards the end especially after the first of the commander died in an inglorious death. Character development for many of the major characters are done very well, probably helped by the sheer amount of airtime available for them. Flashback are done judiciously, unlike Naruto that can have 3 consecutive flashback episodes. The ending does not seem to tie up all loose ends though, maybe those movies/OVA may do the job.

Kaiser Reinhard von Lohengramm, the one who died last.

Character Design:-
The character design here is great, and despite the huge number of characters, their individuality are mostly retained (unlike Jigoku Shoujo).

Fleet Admiral Yang Wenli, the one who died first….

Voice acting:-
The voice for at least the major characters are decent, although I would have like a more imposing voice for Reinhard. The minor characters’ voices are mixed bag though.

….and this is his death’s scene.

Music:-
The OST is great, and I noticed it use a lot of tracks from classical music (that’s what you got from watching Nodame Cantabile a lot of times). Meanwhile about the themes, 3rd and 4th OP and 3rd ED themes are pleasing to the ear.

Animation/Direction:-
The animation, for its time could have been better, but this is not an action anime so this can be forgiven. The directing is great, but in some plotlines it could have been better at ensuring better presentations.

Proof that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Conclusion:-
9 out of 10.
1 point lost from average animation and some weak themes. Do not let these factors prevent you from watching and anime that defines storytelling at its finest. You will not regret it.

A minor character who has problem with women tried to satisfy his urges with the wrong ‘object’. It reminds me that this cat is missing toward the end of the series.

The hero eating his snack.

Today is a review of another oldies I found at TokyoTosho, titled Eat-man 98. Watching this to wait until the Legend of Galactic Heroes download to be finished.

Story:-
A sequel to an anime I haven’t watched, basically this story is just about a mercenary with Saikano powers, only stronger IMHO and also less emo, who travels around the world doing his own thing. And that’s about it.

With story arcs that are so thin, without backing of a good presentation, this series relied heavily on the coolness factor of the main character. There is nothing really I can say more in this section.

Character Design:-
The main character Hellsing-esque design is great, while the side-characters design is mixed bag.

Voice acting:-
Not so many lines from our almost-silent hero, but from what I can hear, it is pretty decent. Others are the same I guess.

Music:-
The OST is great, but the themes are not. The OST really fits the various scenes in the anime, especially of dramatic scenes and of course the action ones.

Animation/Direction:-
The animation is decent I think, but the direction failed in couple of points. The dark scenes more often than not annoy me, because plenty of times major loss of details happened. Plus while the action choreography are decent, some of the scenes makes me say “WTF” even with my normal suspension of belief.

Conclusion:-
6 out of 10.
The hero saves the day really from a lower rating. I am going off to read the manga version, which supposed to be better as I wait for the Legend of Galactic Heroes to finish downloading.

One of the many reactions of people watching the hero having his snack.

This is the villain of the series.

One of the series of oldies I watched recently, today review is for Gokudo-kun Manyuki, a not-so-recent comedy/fantasy series from last decade.

Story:-
Gokudo, your typical sword-wielding adventurer, travels around the world as he seeks fame, wealth and women, and he will do anything to achieve his aim. He accidentally gets himself a magical sword and suddenly he finds out that a king wants him dead for some reason. Alongside unwanted party members that he always wanted to shake off, he went on various adventures as he tried to achieve his dreams.

The story in this show is average at best, and only the antics and character strength of the anti-hero protagonist carried the show forward. Instead of enjoying the storyline, which actually started decent before sliding downwards until the end of the series, you will instead enjoy the comedy and witty dialogues that Gokudo shows. His bad luck with magic, attempts to pimp his female companion to anyone that interested, or sacrificing her to some gods he doesn’t even care off just to achieve what he desires are one of the many things he done to save the sorry excuse that is the show’s storylines.

Our hero do bestiality too!

Character Design:-
Decent I think for its time and genre. No standout characters though.

Voice acting:-
Overall, the voice acting in this series are pretty good, especially the hero.

Music:-
The OP is good, while the ED themes and the OST does not follow suit.

Animation/Direction:-
The animation is good even at fast-paced battle scenes. Battle choreography is great too. The direction is excellent, saving the show’s crappy storyline a lot.

Conclusion:-
6 out of 10.
Basically, only Gokudo Yucott Kikansky makes the show watchable.
